Kathy Bates has retired from Xavier High School,

in the summer of 2021, ending a career that

started 45 years ago at the high school in Appleton.

In 1976, she began a 17-year tenure as an English teacher at XHS before she became the AD in 1992. A long-time coach, she was the varsity girls’ volleyball coach for 14 years, head girls’ track & field coach for 4 years, and assistant track & field coach for 29 years.

She coached many of those Xavier teams in State Tournament competition, with the WISAA and WIAA. Bates has been the athletic director at Xavier HS for the past 29 years, and also was Dean of Students at the school for 25 years.

Kathy also served the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association for 17 years as the District 4 rep for northeastern Wisconsin and was the Gender Rep for an additional 8 years where she served on the Sports Advisory Committee to the WIAA regarding prep sports in the state.  She is a 1971 graduate of XHS.

As a tribute to her dedicated service to Xavier, the Xavier Catholic Schools Foundation is establishing a spend-down fund called the Kathy Bates Athletic Fund. The primary purpose is to provide support to the Xavier Athletic Department.
